There are beautiful websites, Instagram feeds full of gorgeous photographs, different packages, different prices and completely different approaches to photography.
So how do you actually know who’s right for you and your dog?
For me, this became much more personal after I lost my heart dog, Mac. Losing him made me realise just how precious photographs really are. They’re not simply something nice to have sitting on your phone or hanging on the wall. They become part of how you remember someone you loved.
And when it comes to our dogs, I think choosing the right photographer deserves a little more thought than simply comparing prices or picking whoever has availability first.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is choosing a photographer based on price alone.
And I completely understand why.
When you’re comparing photographers, price is the easiest thing to compare. One charges this much, another charges that much, and it can feel like the simplest way to narrow down your options.
But photography isn’t a like for like purchase.
Two photographers can photograph the same dog in the same location and create completely different images.
Their style will differ, their approach to your dog will differ, and the way they guide you through the experience will differ. Even the moments they notice and choose to capture won’t be the same.
So instead of starting with, “How much does it cost?”, I’d start with a different question:
“Do I want photographs that look and feel like this?”
Because ultimately, these are the images you’ll be living with for years.
Why Style Matters More Than Price
Every photographer sees the world a little differently.
Some create light and airy images. Some prefer dark and moody photographs. Some love very posed portraits, while others focus more on candid moments and connection.
My own photography is warm, natural and centred around the relationship you have with your dog. I want to capture personality, little expressions, movement and those moments between you that actually feel like your relationship.
There isn’t one style that’s better than another. There’s simply the style that feels right to you.
When you’re looking through the work of a Canberra photographer, don’t just look at whether the photographs are technically beautiful. Pay attention to how they make you feel.
Can you imagine your dog in those photographs? Do the images feel natural to you? Would you want one of those photographs hanging on your wall ten years from now?
That matters far more than choosing someone simply because their starting price is lower.
Questions to Ask a Canberra Photographer Before You Book
Most people know to ask about price, availability and what’s included.
But there are a few other questions I think are just as important, especially when you’re trusting someone to photograph your dog.
Ask them:
- what happens if your dog won’t sit still
- how they work with dogs who can’t safely be off-lead
- what experience they have with dogs who are nervous, shy, excitable or reactive
You can also ask what happens after the photography session:
- Will they help you choose your photographs?
- Do they help with artwork and product selection?
- Will you know what you’re likely to spend before you book, or are there costs you won’t find out about until later?
These questions tell you a lot more about the experience than simply asking how many photos you’ll receive.
A good photographer shouldn’t make you feel silly for asking questions. You should feel comfortable knowing what to expect before you commit.
Experience With Different Dog Personalities Really Matters
This matters to me. Dogs aren’t professional models. They don’t know they’re at a photo session and haven’t read the plan.
Some dogs arrive ready to explore immediately. Others need time to sniff and figure things out. Some are nervous around strangers. Some get distracted by every bird, dog, and smell within a kilometre. Some can’t be off-lead. Some have about three seconds of patience for sitting still.
A photographer working with dogs should know to adapt. I don’t expect your dog to behave a certain way. My sessions are pet led, meaning I work around your dog’s personality and comfort level.
We give them time if needed. We let them move if needed. And if sitting still isn’t their thing, I don’t spend the whole session forcing it.
When choosing a Canberra photographer, experience isn’t about years behind a camera, it’s about understanding animal in front of it.
A Few Subtle Red Flags to Watch For
Some red flags are obvious. Others are easy to miss. Pay attention to how a photographer talks about dogs who don’t behave perfectly. If everything suggests dogs must sit, stay, and follow instructions for the session to work, ask what happens when they don’t, because often, they won’t.
I’d also be cautious if the process isn’t clear before booking. You should know what you’re booking, what to expect, and the likely investment upfront. Finally, notice how you feel when you communicate. Do you feel listened to? Do they ask about your dog? Are they interested in what you want?
Those small interactions often reflect the whole experience.
Why Connection and Trust Matter Just as Much as the Photos
You might only spend a few hours with your photographer, but you’re trusting them with something incredibly personal. Your dog. Your relationship. And memories that may become far more valuable over time. That’s why connection matters.
You should feel comfortable telling your photographer your dog is anxious, reactive, or obsessed with chasing birds. You should be able to admit you’re nervous about being photographed. And you should feel like your photographer genuinely cares about understanding your dog, not just fitting them into a set formula.
After Mac passed away, the photos I had of him changed. They weren’t just images anymore. They were reminders of his expressions, his personality, and the life we shared.
That experience is a big part of why I photograph dogs the way I do now. I know these images can become more meaningful with time, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.
What a Good Photography Experience Should Actually Feel Like
A photography session shouldn’t feel like a test your dog needs to pass. You shouldn’t arrive worrying that your dog will embarrass you because they won’t sit still or are too excited. And you definitely shouldn’t spend the entire session apologising for them.
A good experience should feel guided but relaxed. You should know what’s happening and what you need to do, while still having space to simply enjoy being with your dog. Your photographer should be able to adjust when things don’t go to plan.
From the first conversation through to choosing your finished photographs and artwork, you should feel supported rather than left wondering what comes next. For me, the experience matters because it’s what the photographs are built on.
I want you to look at your finished artwork and remember an afternoon spent loving on your dog, laughing at the ridiculous things they did, and simply enjoying being together. Not the afternoon you spent stressing because someone desperately wanted your dog to sit still.
Choosing the Right Canberra Photographer Comes Down to Trust
There are plenty of things to consider when you’re choosing a Canberra photographer. Style, experience, price, products and location all matter. But one of the most important questions is much simpler. Do you trust this person to tell your dog’s story?
Because you’re not just choosing someone who knows how to use a camera. You’re choosing the person who’ll notice the tiny expression you love. The way your dog looks at you. The ridiculous little habit that makes you laugh every single day.
You’re choosing someone to preserve a chapter of your life that won’t last forever. We think we’ll remember everything. The little looks. The funny habits. The way they followed us from room to room. The exact expression on their face when they knew we were about to go for a walk. But photographs give us somewhere to return to.
