I'm so over the cold winter days, so I'm excited that spring is almost here in Canberra. The mornings feel lighter, the sun's out making things a little warmer, and I can see the cherry blossoms starting to sneak out. We have had a very cold freezing winter this year in Canberra, so I'm over it and I'm ready to welcome the warmer weather… and I’m pretty sure the dogs are too.
But the other thing I love about Spring is that it's my favourite time to take photos. Everything looks fresh, the flowers are blooming, the light is soft and golden, and dogs just seem extra full of beans. If you’re keen to get some photos of your dog this spring, or just want some ideas for snapping them yourself, here are a few fun ones to try.
Floral backdrop – using the beautiful flowers and blossoms around you either as backdrop or using it to create dept to add that boost of colour in the photos.
Snout in the flowers – because of course they think every flower smells like a snack!
Golden hour portraits – those dreamy golden hour afternoons where the light makes everything feel magical. I find the golden hour in Spring is extra special!!
Leaping for joy – just letting your dogs have fun, capturing them in action, running, mid-air, ears flying, all that spring happiness in one shot.
Honestly, these are just some of the little things I love most about photographing dogs. It’s not about posing them perfectly, it’s about catching those real moments that show who they are.
If you’re nodding along thinking “yep, my dog does all of that,” then this spring is the perfect time to grab some photos. Canberra’s parks and gardens are about to burst with colour, and it’s such a fun backdrop for dogs being their goofy, loveable selves.
And if you’d like some tips on how to actually catch those action shots instead of ending up with a blurry photo, I’ve got you covered. I’m running a live online class:
I’ll share exactly how I freeze those blink and you'll miss it moments, so you can capture your dog’s leaps, zoomies, and playtime in a way that feels real and fun. Bring your love for your dog, and I’ll bring the tips.
Spring is such a feel-good season. The days are warmer, the flowers are out, and the dogs are living their best lives. If you take anything from this, it’s to get out there with your pup, soak it all in, and maybe snap a few photos while you’re at it. Because these little everyday moments? They’re the ones you’ll want to keep forever.
