This isn’t science. It’s just for fun. A silly little way to imagine what your dog might be saying when they wag their tail, drop a toy at your feet or follow you from room to room.
Because let’s be real… dogs have their own language of love. They might not buy you flowers or write you love notes (though that would be pretty amazing if they could..,right?), but they have plenty of ways to say “I love you” if you pay attention.
So, inspired by the whole “five love languages” idea, here’s a playful look at how dogs might show their love and how those little quirks are my favourite moments to capture in photos.
Quality Time
This one is for the “Velcro dogs.” Now my dogs, James, Pippa & Rosie are your definition of Velcro dogs, the ones who just want to be near you no matter what. They are always following me everyone, sitting on my lap when they can (even when I have my laptop on my lap!), curling up right next to my legs when I'm working or following me into the kitchen for snacks!! They do not need much, they just want to be around you.
Physical Touch
Some dogs show love through touch. They lean against you, ask for belly rubs, nudge your hand with their nose or curl up right in your lap (my dogs James and Pippa also fits this definition). If your dog flops over for tummy scratches the second you walk in the door or wiggles under the blanket at night or as soon as you stop patting them they keep tapping you to continue, this might be their way of saying “I love you.”
Acts of Service
These are the little helpers. Love, for them, is dropping toys at your feet, trying to “help” you around the house or checking in when you are feeling low. They bark at the mailman, not because they are angry but because they think they are protecting their family.
Gifts
Some pups are gift givers. They might proudly present you with their favourite toy, a crunchy autumn leaf or something questionable (i've had one of those questionable things.... you don't want to know lol). It is their way of saying, “You are my favourite human and I want to share this with you.”
Words of Affirmation
These are the chatterboxes and the tail waggers. They light up when you talk to them, wag when they hear praise and even “talk back” with happy barks or groans. Tell them they are a good dog and they will beam with pride and maybe give you a barky reply.
Of course, this is all just for fun. Most dogs are a little bit of everything, with one or two love languages that stand out the most. The best part is noticing those sweet quirks and realising how many ways they say “I love you.”
At the end of the day, it does not matter what “language” they speak. What matters is that you have this wonderful little soul who loves you in their own way, every single day. And that kind of love is pretty special.
I'd love to know, what love language does your dog speak?
