Why I love Havanese

Every time I go out with my dogs James, Pippa and Rosie people always ask me what breed they are. Some asked if they're a caboodle, or a Maltese cross or a Shih Tzu cross. And I always say, 'No, they're not , they're Havanese'. And the response I always get is, Hava-what?? What's that a mix of?

And then I go on with my spiel, actually Havanese is a pure breed. They're a member of the Bichon family (Bichon Frise, Maltese). The breed is the native to Cuba - Havana, hence the name Havanese. They're small dogs and range between 5kg up to 10kg. According to Dogs NSW, "Their small but sturdy bodies, adaptable nature and social skills make Havanese an ideal city dog, but they are content to be anywhere that they can command the attention of admirers young and old alike. Havanese are smart and trainable extroverts with the comic instincts of a born clown, are natural trick dogs."

I love the temperament of Havanese. They have a happy temperament and they are a great companion. They love snuggling on your lap or playing with each other. I found that this breed is very affectionate. They are very people oriented so this means they can get quite dependent on us. I love the Havanese because I have three of my own, as I mentioned above - James, Pippa and Rosie (also pictured above). They are my fur babies, my family.

Each one of them are special and have their own personality and little quirks. James loves pats and will constantly tap me for pats and attention. Pippa loves kisses and she loves playing with me and Rosie, well Rosie is a special girl. She loves talking to me and dancing around with me.

They are just so loveable. I love watching Rosie and Pippa play together while James sits next to me demanding pats.  They are very gentle and very loving, they give me so much affection. The other good thing about the Havanese is their coat - they don't shed!

My other favourite breed is within the same family as the Havanese and that is the Maltese, my heart dog Mac was a Maltese x silky.

So that's it, yes, I may be a bit biased for loving the Havanese breed because I do have 3 of my own - they all came to me when they were a bit older.

What is your favourite breed or what breed do you love? Let me know in the comments.

Cahlean - Havanese are adorable dogs! They do look like other small lap dogs, what's the main thing that makes them different from their breed relatives? My favorite breeds: rottweiler, pit bull & Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs - plus mutts of all varieties!

Nicole - I've always wondered about these little dogs. Many years ago, the groomer at the vet clinic I worked at had a Havanese, and I loved that dog's personality and temperament. But not knowing about the breed, I never knew if that one was typical of the breed. Sounds like she was. Thanks for sharing.
