It's something we don't like to face, our dogs getting older. And you know that look older dogs give you, especially when you've had them most of their life. It’s like they’re saying, “I’ve seen every version of you.” The late nights, the early mornings, the wins, the heartbreaks, the tough days, they've seen it all, they’ve been through it all with you. They’re always right there, quietly by your side, a steady and familiar presence giving you unconditional love.
As they get old, other than some attention and loving, they don’t need much from you. A comfy bed, a short stroll every now and then, and just spending time next to you on the couch. That’s it. That’s enough. Senior pets are like that, simple in their needs, but full of love.
That’s why I love photographing them.
Age catches up with all of them eventually. Some slow down. Some grow greyer or whiter in the muzzle, in their coat by the day. But there’s so much beauty in this season of their life.
This is something I hear a lot from pet owners with senior dogs. But the truth is, old age doesn’t take away from the magic of these sessions. There’s no need for running or posing or doing anything out of the ordinary. They get to just be themselves—and that’s more than enough.
We take it slow. If they want to lie in the grass, perfect. If they’re more comfortable being held in your arms, that’s completely fine. Honestly, some of my favourite images have come from these quiet, gentle moments.
Photos don’t need to mark a big event. Sometimes, they’re simply a way of saying, “This is us, right now.” And that alone is worth capturing.
So if you’ve got a pet who’s a little older, take a second to really see them. They still nudge your hand for a pat. They still follow you from room to room, even if they take their time getting there. They look at you with that soft, knowing look—the kind that comes from years of love and trust.
That’s the magic of this chapter.
It’s not loud or showy, but it’s full of tenderness. The kind of love that’s grown quietly over thousands of ordinary days.
So let’s pause for a moment, for them. Let’s remember that they’ve lived a full life with you, and that’s something worth celebrating. And if you’ve never had a professional pet photography session, don't wait any longer. Let's create these memories.
