It is December already and I have been looking back at all the dogs I photographed this year. When I think about the locations we visited, one place stands out above everything else for pet photography in all the Canberra locations I photograph. Yarralumla English Garden was easily the top location for my pet photography sessions this year and the most popular choice among my clients.
If you have had a session with me, you already know I love shooting at sunset. The light is softer, dogs settle more easily, and everything feels calmer. Yarralumla fits that perfectly. It looks beautiful in every season and consistently gives us the best mix of good light, open space, and quiet corners.
Here is what this spot looks and feels like throughout the year and why so many of your dogs loved it too.
Summer can be intense in Canberra, but sunset completely transforms the garden. By the time the sun drops, the heat eases, the light turns golden, and the lake breeze makes it comfortable again. Summer sunsets here feel cinematic and relaxed.
Dogs usually wander around with that slow, holiday energy that looks amazing in photos.
Why summer sunsets are beautiful:
• Long golden hour
• Plenty of shade
• Easy, relaxed atmosphere
Autumn here is beautiful. The garden turns golden, the leaves fall, and the temperature drops just enough for dogs to feel comfortable and playful. Sunset light in autumn is warm and gentle and it really flatters every coat colour.
Why autumn works well here:
• Gorgeous warm tones
• Comfortable weather for dogs
• Long, soft golden hour light
Winter gets overlooked, but it is actually one of the most peaceful seasons for dog photography in Canberra. The gardens are quiet, the tones are muted in a really flattering way, and the sunset light is soft and even. It is perfect for dogs who prefer slow, quiet spaces such as seniors or anxious pups.
Why winter sessions shine:
• Soft sunset tones
• Fewer people around
• A calm, slower atmosphere
Spring brings fresh colour and happy dogs. Blossoms fill the gardens, everything turns green again, and dogs usually arrive with extra excitement. Sunset looks fresh and clean and the whole space feels uplifting.
It is also the season when many people finally book the session they have been thinking about for months.
Why spring works so well:
• Blossoms and vibrant greens
• Energetic dogs
• Clean, bright sunset light
Watching Yarralumla change from season to season and photographing your dogs through all of it has been one of the highlights of my year. Every session felt a little different and every dog brought something special.
If you are thinking about a summer sunset session or you want to gift a pet photography session to someone who loves their dog, I am here whenever you are ready to chat.
Cheers to December, golden light, and all the dogs who made this year feel really special.
