Christmas Traditions Your Dog Will Love Too

Christmas at home feels extra special when you have a dog around. They don’t know what’s going on, but they definitely know something is different. The tree goes up, there are new smells everywhere, people come and go, and they follow you around like they’re part of the planning committee.

If you’ve ever thought it would be nice to start a few simple Christmas traditions, here are some ideas that are really sweet and really easy. Nothing over the top. Just small things that make the season feel a bit more yours.

A Christmas Morning Walk

I swear this is the best way to start the day before the heat kicks in.  Start early so that the air and ground is still cool, everything’s quiet, and your dog is already beside themselves with happiness. It’s such a calm little moment before the chaos starts.

One New Ornament Each Year

This one is really cute. Pick an ornament that represents something from your year. It could be a tiny photo of your dog, something funny, something beachy. Over time your tree becomes a little memory wall instead of just “random decorations I panic-bought.” Or If you are or have been a client of mine, you can order a photo Christmas ornaments of your dog to put on the tree!

A Christmas Sniff Adventure

Choose a new place every December for a little wander. A shady trail, a walk around Lake Burley Griffin, or an evening walk around street to see the Christmas lights and decorations neighbours has put up. Your dog gets all the exciting smells and you get a break from the December rush. It’s simple but honestly so nice.

Matching PJ Morning

You don’t need fancy matching sets, but if you do that's even better!! Even similar colours count. Take one quick photo on the couch with messy morning hair and your dog somewhere in the frame. These photos always end up being the ones everyone loves the most.

And honestly, if you want a tradition that really grows with you, a photography session is such a lovely one to start.

Some families come back every year or every couple of years and it’s so sweet seeing how their dogs grow and how life changes. And having those moments printed and on your wall… it’s a different kind of joy. You walk past it and it just makes you smile.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a session for yourself or gifting one to someone who loves their dog, my Christmas gift certificates are a sweet option. And they’re still on special until the 24th, so if you want something meaningful to look forward to, now’s a good time to grab one.

Hope your Christmas feels soft and calm and full of the little moments that stick with you.
